It has been a busy year and the next few months are always the busiest. Every year I always am too in the thick of it to look for an intern when I need one the most, so I am hoping to break that pattern this year! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1_baeq8iJ-Piw5qKztR5J4kS70YwMJKY5E4oy0K4v4ufOvzeSz3vIRCbUoffVSpf8Q4O3_fGLgr4AXlExUKUUaKGtTPb6guE4tgKLiqoeU89BAxZNfpr6nS2gONda0eW3pZW6bIk5Nw8/s1600/intern1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1_baeq8iJ-Piw5qKztR5J4kS70YwMJKY5E4oy0K4v4ufOvzeSz3vIRCbUoffVSpf8Q4O3_fGLgr4AXlExUKUUaKGtTPb6guE4tgKLiqoeU89BAxZNfpr6nS2gONda0eW3pZW6bIk5Nw8/s1600/intern1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am looking for an intern to help out at my studio 5-10 hours a week with the possibility for more hours as things progress. I need someone in/around Burlington to come to my studio to help with a little of everything. Some of the bigger things I would need help with are packaging orders for my etsy shops and wholesale orders mainly but may also need help in producing handmade products, running errands, general upkeep, etc. I not only run a handmade etsy shop but I also have a vintage and supply shop which gets super busy around this time of year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you are looking for some side work and are detail oriented, self-motivated, have great computer skills, are crafty and interested in seeing the behind the scenes of a tiny small business with a focus on handmade, please be in touch. This would be a great experience for someone looking to start their own handmade business or open an etsy shop. If you are interested, please e-mail me at nicoleerincarey@gmail.com I am looking forward to hearing from you! </div>

First of all, things have been super busy because... I'm getting married!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxXtRORnj3bP4OAqho7kt1lRNf5GAHh-uelPpr5H7vdGArzQ-AXduc1u3xiGGlgmxvlF0BL9pNN2yEe_PfNS71xhw-Rlu47u9A_OaCg4Aafdu1dOhMA1znXrM4Jt-wPiFzxX8E5qqgaqQ/s1600/1186957_694711054221_1584940034_n-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxXtRORnj3bP4OAqho7kt1lRNf5GAHh-uelPpr5H7vdGArzQ-AXduc1u3xiGGlgmxvlF0BL9pNN2yEe_PfNS71xhw-Rlu47u9A_OaCg4Aafdu1dOhMA1znXrM4Jt-wPiFzxX8E5qqgaqQ/s1600/1186957_694711054221_1584940034_n-1.jpg" height="316" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And... wedding planning is a little crazy and time consuming, but also really fun! So things like blogging, naturally, have fallen off of the radar. But that's not to say that lots of new things aren't going on! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lately, I've been anxiously awaiting warmer weather. I've been training for a half marathon and the cold and wind and ICE are just not conducive to running outdoors. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All of this coldness has surely kept me crafty through the winter though. Here are a few of the items from spring that are available for preorder on <a href="http://nicolecarey.etsy.com/">my etsy shop</a>. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This tribal patterned dress is available in four different. I LOVE these fabrics and am so excited to crank these dresses out for springtime. This week I will also be sending a big batch of clothing to Art Star in Philadelphia. I'm so excited to be a returning vendor for their craft fair this year as well. <a href="http://artstarphilly.com/">Art Star</a> was one of the first shops to ever carry my line. It must have been 7 years ago at this point. Crazy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hope to keep updating the blog more regularly. In the meantime, check out what is listed of the spring line so far on <a href="http://nicolecarey.etsy.com/">etsy</a>! </div>

Better late than never! I invite you all to come join me in my studio sale this weekend. I'll be selling all of my wears and it will be a fun opportunity to check out where I work. We also have the space to try stuff on here. The trickiest thing as a clothing-maker during craft shows is being able to offer a place to try things on. Usually I tell my customers to feel free to slip things on over their clothes, etc. but it's not quite the same as having a comfortable place to do it. So come on down and enjoy 10% off if you buy one garment, or 20% if you buy two or more. The address is 266 S. Champlain Street Burlington, VT 05401.. but the entrance is on Pine St. Enter just before Curtis Lumber and go around all the way to the back! Feel free to call, text, or e-mail if you have trouble finding me. Hope to see you soon!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10210683210427194039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5121196442011977508.post-73132174897884403532013-06-24T07:21:00.002-07:002013-06-24T09:04:10.041-07:00New items + new studio!<br />

(this picture was taken last Saturday) </div>
I've been sewing up a storm to have lots of new inventory for the <a href="http://www.burlingtoncityarts.org/Artist_Market/">market</a> this year! I'll be at the market almost every Saturday from 9-2:30 (weather pending) Some other exciting news is that I have moved my studio out of my second bedroom and into a studio space in the arts district in Burlington. (!!!)<br />

Here is the space before I moved all of my things in!</div>
<br />
I hope to have a studio warming party in just a few short weeks and also regular hours to come in and shop. In the meantime, I am typically in there from 12-4. Usually earlier and later too - but those hours seem to be pretty stable. If you'd like to come in to see what's new just send me an <a href="mailto:nicoleerincarey@gmail.com">e-mai</a>l or <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NicolesThreads">facebook message</a>!<br />
Here are some of the new dresses I've been working on. I've been loving these bright prints and the fabric is so light weight -- perfect for the dog days of summer!<br />

A roadtrip with a musician friend is what led me to Vermont for the first time just five years ago. It was just what I needed at the time. Where time passes just a little slower, and where people passing by take the time to smile and say hello. This is where I wanted to be. Easy though to forget how special a place is really is, when you get into the rhythm of everyday life.<br />
For some reason, inspiration always tends to be tied into nostalgia somehow. And I immediately began falling in love with Vermont all over during my mini-road trip.<br />

For those of you who don't know of Jen Kahn's addicting <a href="http://jenkahn.etsy.com/">jewelry</a>, I am telling you that you must check her out. Her designs are perfection and there is a piece for every woman.<br />
<br />
She's been killing it promoting her chakra line through a <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2027627521/chakra-kahn-wrap-bracelets-anklets">kickstarter</a> campaign that launched last week.<br />
<br />
<br />
I would highly recommend checking it out and making a pledge. Not only will you receive a beautiful piece of art, but you will be supporting a wonderful person as well! And don't we all love to support artists who just happen to also be nice people?<br />

<br />
I had the pleasure of taking a mini road trip last week with my friend <a href="http://jenkahn.etsy.com/">Jen Kahn</a> last week. I've never visited many of the stores I sell to around the country and it's always<br />
such a fun experience when I get to check one out after having sold there for a while. <a href="http://www.shoptherev.com/">Revolution</a> in White River Junction, VT is one of the first shops that carried my line when I moved to Vermont and I finally found time to go visit. Nearby is <a href="http://jenkahn.etsy.com/">Jen</a>'s old stomping grounds from when she was an apprentice with <a href="http://www.celiefago.com/">Celie Fago</a>. So we decided to make a day of it. Jen was kind enough to show me around all of the funky parts of the Upper Valley. I'll be splitting it into two separate trips because the visit to Celie's studio deserves a spotlight post of its own.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am so excited to have this winter down time to work on some projects. I am completely switching up my packaging from the handmade, hand-stamped cards. I designed and ordered (with the help of my good friend Nicole Jayne!) new earring & accessory cards. My old cards were made one-by-one by me. After the holiday rush I am always reevaluating the past year to see how I can make things run more smoothly and efficiently for next year. At the top of my list was to work on packaging. Branding is so important to a small business like mine, so it was important that these had a handmade feel. I am so excited to get them in my mail box. These cards will even have my website. I can't believe I was sending them out to folks as gifts without that link for so long. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also am looking forward to having fabric swatches all in one place for folks to choose from! As more and more folks are looking to me to make them matching jewelry/cuff links for their weddings, it only makes sense to have a swatch catalogue. This will also make my wholesale customers orders much easier! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On another exciting note, I am taking a small business course and at the end I'll have a business plan (for a new venture - eeeee!) There is another thang or two I've got up my sleeve, but I want to be sure that I know if I am ready to take the next step. I'm also hoping to learn how to get help. There is <i>only so much </i>I can do myself. After running my business alone full time for two years, I find that I need help! Well, it's been a long day of learning excel and playing with photoshop. Off to dreamland... </div>

It is cold out there. I was inspired by my friend <a href="http://loveericajewelry.blogspot.com/">Erica</a> and this weather to create some new ear warmer headbands. I made three prototypes that I may list on <a href="http://nicolecarey.etsy.com/">etsy</a>, but I make keep myself. I think these will be around $28. They are made from vintage & reclaimed sweaters!<br />

These are one of the popular items this season, the color block dress! Modeled here by Jennifer Kahn of <a href="http://jenkahn.etsy.com/">Jennifer Kahn Jewelry</a> (thanks Jen!) and myself. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEyB70lszQ6hr8HwfH0ABv6z9j4MUZQZ6P30JPEG5bCEJZW8FPZ0vpzwApoJXr3LWR9w42G-M3yj6dMG_g7GeaIEloGZ2nqPOe1OGeTP9LTmERyYmd-bS_08zggczozbkXmyv8aOIa8L0/s1600/EtsyLogo.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="164" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEyB70lszQ6hr8HwfH0ABv6z9j4MUZQZ6P30JPEG5bCEJZW8FPZ0vpzwApoJXr3LWR9w42G-M3yj6dMG_g7GeaIEloGZ2nqPOe1OGeTP9LTmERyYmd-bS_08zggczozbkXmyv8aOIa8L0/s320/EtsyLogo.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
Today I had the opportunity to give an <a href="http://www.etsy.com/">Etsy</a> workshop, to share tips with my fellow Vermonters in hopes of having some of them better their internet selling experience. I spoke in public in front of about 20 people. I haven't done something of the like since high school. Easy it is to hide behind this computer and talk but having all of your idiosyncrasies out there for everyone to see - well that is something! I practiced by videotaping myself. Um.. do I roll my eyes a lot? I mean nothing by it! I didn't even know I did it until yesterday. Do I say like, like way too much? Yeah. Well, like.. um... yeah.. woops. It's easy to edit and re-edit all of my internet doings but having no filter was a rather new experience for me. I play music (not as much as I used to) and the part that I hated most about playing out was having to say things in between songs. What to say? I don't have anything to say. Well it turns out that I do!<br />
<br />
After writing a power point, making lots of notes and practicing I have come up with some tips that I'd like to share. Lots and lots of questions were asked and hopefully answered. While practicing, I worried that I wouldn't fill my time slot with all of the information. Quite to the contrary, time was running out and lots of questions seemed to remain. I hope that my workshop gave you a needed push in the right direction.<br />
<br />
Here are some notes from the presentation for those of you who weren't able to make it or for those that would like a re-cap.<br />
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></h3>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Beginnings.</span></h2>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">What do you want to sell? </span></h3>
<h4>
Choosing a shop name. <span style="font-weight: normal;">Brainstorm with friends. Write a list of descriptive words. Pick out a shop name that is catchy and not in use. </span></h4>
<div>
<b>Decorating. </b>Develop a brand or logo and use this for your shop banner. Create an avatar with a photo of an item or a picture of yourself. I would recommend not having your avatar be of an item that has been sold and cannot be reproduced.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Stocking your shop. </b>The more, the better. But keep it organized and in sections so that it is easy for your customer to navigate your shop. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Photos. </span></h2>
<div>
<b>Use natural light whenever possible. </b>Cloudy days or shade is best. Direct sun can create unwanted shadows and glares. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Avoid flashes.</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b>Use live models. </b>Everyone likes to see what something will look like on a real person. If a live model doesn't apply, try some other sort of props but be sure that it is absolutely clear what is for sale in the photo and reiterate that in your items description. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Use all five photo spots that Etsy offers. </b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Pricing</span></h2>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">What is your cost of materials? </span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What will you pay yourself per hour/day/piece/etc.? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Do not undervalue your work. People come to etsy to buy unique and handmade items. Don't compare your prices to factory mass produced items because they are not the same. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Some quick calculations for pricing are: </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Cost of materials*2+labor= Wholesale price</div>
<div>
Wholesale price*2= Retail price</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Listing an item</span></h2>
<div>
This link provides step by step instructions on listing an item. <a href="http://www.etsy.com/help/article/187">http://www.etsy.com/help/article/187</a> </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Bringing potential shoppers to your site</span></h2>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">-Exhaust all social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc.) </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
-Blogging.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
-Join a treasury or other etsy team</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
-Etsy search ads. These haven't worked much for me but try it out! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
-Coupon codes. Offer coupon codes for a repeat sale, to your facebook, twitter or other social media outlets. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Customer Service</span></h2>
<div>
<b>Etsy Conversations & Internet Etiquette </b>It can be hard to infer that you are always being friendly on the internet. When in doubt, just use lots of !, smiley faces and positive words. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Keeping in touch after a purchase. </b>Let your buyer know when you shipped your item out, or if it is something that is made to order, keep them up to date on how long until they should expect it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Thank you. </b>Include a thank you note with each order. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Angry customers? </b>Take a chill pill before responding to them. Wait until you are calm enough to be nice, even if they are a jerk. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Shop policies. </b>These are important. These dictate whether you take returns and your conditions, etc. It is also a good section to put whether you insure your packages, provide delivery confirmation, etc. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I hope the workshop/blog post was helpful and I wish you the best of luck in your etsy adventure! </div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10210683210427194039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5121196442011977508.post-16178044357515804902012-03-14T15:22:00.004-07:002012-03-14T15:23:49.533-07:00my first quilt<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx9GwZCwria5Yd6mxNmVvpUnpudHwwuQL1c87J-xeecvGtTYxGMsD1j0j1IcPynPZYayaCCinuOHKwABlYrtm7hBilGDutWLoPy1mlk9nrHRCbYomP9qsT3kKuRW0oDHc7Zbijdoyp2fI/s1600/quilt1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx9GwZCwria5Yd6mxNmVvpUnpudHwwuQL1c87J-xeecvGtTYxGMsD1j0j1IcPynPZYayaCCinuOHKwABlYrtm7hBilGDutWLoPy1mlk9nrHRCbYomP9qsT3kKuRW0oDHc7Zbijdoyp2fI/s640/quilt1.jpg" width="420" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made my first quilt! Can you believe it took me this long to actually do it? I have been saying for years that I would make one. For every winter since I learned to sew in fact. The hardest part about it was starting. I am not one to follow a pattern when it comes to this sort of thing. I am too inspired by lots of colors and patterns mixed together to create a bright and cheery piece. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have used lots of patchwork and quilting techniques in my <a href="http://nicolecarey.etsy.com/">clothing</a>. But there are so many steps to completing a quilt that the project was still a bit foreign. I hadn't ever made my own bias tape, had no idea how to begin with mitered corn haven't had any experience with quilt batting, or which kind to buy, and I wasn't certain whether my machine could handle topstiching such a big piece.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcxMc0AsJRNaj1_LQI-rzhy_INpzV64Vwj4zq2QQP-NxIp_P6RfjOnZ6iXetGZ1rp4W-4xW2H6hUuhagNyxZL7YTq9At1g-lbBydKEhI_c1__o8Gokj1A4s6kqsWrK0ymuvv0CxATMhtM/s1600/hotpad51.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcxMc0AsJRNaj1_LQI-rzhy_INpzV64Vwj4zq2QQP-NxIp_P6RfjOnZ6iXetGZ1rp4W-4xW2H6hUuhagNyxZL7YTq9At1g-lbBydKEhI_c1__o8Gokj1A4s6kqsWrK0ymuvv0CxATMhtM/s320/hotpad51.jpg" width="320" /></a> I thank the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+attach+bias+tape&oq=how+to+attach+bias+&aq=0&aqi=g2&aql=&gs_sm=3&gs_upl=23140l27140l0l28411l18l18l2l3l4l0l165l1437l5.8l13l0">countless</a> videos on youtube for teaching me how to make bias tape, attach it, perfect mitered corners, and how to top stitch on a home machine. I practiced all of the techniques that I would eventually use for the quilt by making hot pads and pot holders. I love how they came out. I lined them with two layers of either felt or fleece. I used mine a few times and didn't burn my hands but I still want to test them out a bit more before I list them in the etsy shop! I also learned that there is an insulated liner that I can buy for if I make them in the future. Who knew? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I quickly realized that if I wanted to make a regular sized quilt for my bed I would have to send it out to be top stitched. The little bit of arm space on a regular sewing machine isn't wide enough to fit the bulk of a regular sized quilt through. I decided to make a lap quilt or baby blanket (but I'm not a baby and it's for me so it's a lap quilt). It was still kind of tough and annoying to top stitch especially when I got to the middle. If I make bigger quilts I will most likely have to hire someone else to top stitch or see if there is a place where I could rent a long arm machine. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIbRi9vfSHv84Z_juZeVF5ZCH28vSZLTxB3_wxmS398ObzcDg5krsLXlz1baqJXYsw60lcKLU1U9884FUOF9ipYgjTGVj64iQ9Qhm5BaXknWC1GeDhjZ7jc_K56aAnGb7IMeyZjmc3LyM/s1600/quiltexplained.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIbRi9vfSHv84Z_juZeVF5ZCH28vSZLTxB3_wxmS398ObzcDg5krsLXlz1baqJXYsw60lcKLU1U9884FUOF9ipYgjTGVj64iQ9Qhm5BaXknWC1GeDhjZ7jc_K56aAnGb7IMeyZjmc3LyM/s640/quiltexplained.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used some of my favorite fabrics that I have been saving for ages for this project. Each fabric brings back a memory of where I got it, or if someone gave it to me. Some are from my old clothing or a shirt from my Mom. I try to find fabric when I go on trips to remember them by. This quilt was heavily influenced by the <a href="http://www.quiltsofgeesbend.com/">Quilting Women of Gee's Bend</a>. One of my biggest regrets was missing their exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am already daydreaming up new ideas for quilts. I think I will try a few more small ones before I move on to the big guys! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over the holidays I didn't have enough time to make all of my clothing from scratch to fulfill the amount of shows/inventory I would need. (Again, reminder to self for next year: DON'T SIGN UP FOR SO MANY SHOWS!!) I had a lot of fun doing applique to hoodies, shirts and tees but never thought it would be a main focus for me. I will be scaling down on my inventory of those items and most likely not reordering to make more. I'll be listing them in the etsy shop over the next few weeks, so if you see something you like, snatch it up because chances are that I will not be making them anymore. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While weighting the pros and cons I really can't tell you how much I enjoy making my clothing from scratch but that being said, who doesn't enjoy a nice fitting cozy hoodie? I have quite a few different sizes, styles, colors, etc. that will be listed over the next few weeks. I *may* keep one style/color of hoodie but haven't decided if it's something I want to continue carrying. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll also be working on my spring line! What are some colors you'd like to see for spring? </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2yRXHSaWkX9o-fJx1QwLMCw_shb-IeaSU-vGutjlKL_2v92cEghG1vz-FVkEy6Q8EMXX3kOa5gHEWPL4aptL808-VK6jlJkAat-_mes2igbm6-3AKELjTsERXsUApbq6Im8w9cKbA7Hw/s1600/xmasfloral41.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2yRXHSaWkX9o-fJx1QwLMCw_shb-IeaSU-vGutjlKL_2v92cEghG1vz-FVkEy6Q8EMXX3kOa5gHEWPL4aptL808-VK6jlJkAat-_mes2igbm6-3AKELjTsERXsUApbq6Im8w9cKbA7Hw/s320/xmasfloral41.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Consistently I set a goal for myself to blog once a week. And. Well. It just doesn't happen. I don't know why I can't find the time to keep things up to date on here. I find time to look at craig's list 10 times a day, check my e-mail 20 and stare at etsy for hours on end.<br />
<br />
I HAVE set a goal for myself for the new year: Not to bite off more than I can chew! This past <strike>holiday season </strike><b>year </b>was absolutely insane. I learned a lot! I try not to look at my mistakes as mistakes but to learn from them for next year. I signed myself up for too many craft shows this past year. It left me tired, weary, disorganized, tired, unprepared, and tired. I had too much inventory. I bought WAY too many supplies that I now have to figure out what to do with.<br />
<br />
Things I need to remember for this year and <i>especially</i> next holiday season:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Stick local</b> during crazy times of the year! This year I traveled to <a href="http://www.renegadecraftfair.com/">Renegade Craft Fair </a>in Chicago and San Francisco all within two weeks of each other. I closed <a href="http://nicolecarey.etsy.com/">my etsy shops</a> down during the busiest time of the year. While I had a super duper awesome time, I was way too stressed out about traveling (hoping there were no cancellations), mailing my stuff to other states (and crossing my fingers that it would get there without any mishaps), finding my way around an unfamiliar city (luckily my awesome friends + Mike's family made this super easy). Next year I need to focus on etsy, apply to local shows, and even consider renegade again if I can find someone local there to vend for me.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><b>Avoid facebook</b>! I spend way too much time dilly dallying around social networking sites. <i>Sometimes</i> it's pertinent to work, most of the time I am just farting around, looking at pictures, lalalalalala and there goes an hour here, half hour there. This is valuable time that I could be using in much more productive manners. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><b>Stay neat and organized. </b>I can't tell you how much time I've wasted looking for my scissors, tape, etc. It is so much easier to function in a clean and tidy space. I have definitely been getting better at this since I moved this past year but I am just naturally a messy person. What can I say? </li>
</ul>
<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSZ1JMunmoPueGjUpsRoEOqZQLiufjgK_3qbf5taIRuVNvTPIOFN9fXPvmgckKL-kCh-IVpAhLzQOr7JVF46LJ9gO019Kuu35okzY5nmP50laJwfPfAyPtksZqm7ZB_rRds9cSSy3rvJg/s1600/dogs1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSZ1JMunmoPueGjUpsRoEOqZQLiufjgK_3qbf5taIRuVNvTPIOFN9fXPvmgckKL-kCh-IVpAhLzQOr7JVF46LJ9gO019Kuu35okzY5nmP50laJwfPfAyPtksZqm7ZB_rRds9cSSy3rvJg/s320/dogs1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li><b>Make friends. </b> I don't mean for this to sound as pathetic as it does. I really am not pathetic but I live in rural Vermont, you have to actually make plans and stick to them to see other people. When you work from home like me several days can go by where the only people I interact with are Mike, Liane at the post office (Hi Liane!), and my dogs. See, I just called my dogs people. One thing I really miss about having a regular job (probably the only thing I miss) is awesome coworkers. During the summer and holiday season I do enough craft fairs where I feel like I have coworkers. Awesome coworkers that are all super talented. I miss them. Um, hey guys. Want to come over for dinner? </li>
<li><b>EatDrinkSleep </b>Ahhhh. Winter weight and brain fog. It's definitely hard to convince myself to go outside for a walk on certain days. Especially when it happens to be -10 or so but that cold air (maybe not that cold) keeps things running! I've noticed after several days without much exercise that not only does the the physical activity help me during these cold dark days of winter but the fresh air really helps my brain feel a little less like a pile of mush. I am signing up for <a href="http://www.evolutionvt.com/">yoga classes today and also physical therapy</a>!...which brings me to my next point also about taking care of yourself. </li>
<li><b>Invest in things that lighten your load. </b>Before I do one more show, I am buying a push cart that makes sense. I remember my friends <a href="http://www.jessgrahamstudio.com/">Jess</a> and <a href="http://www.recyclemoe.com/">Moe</a> saying that if you have to make more than two trips to load in or out, you're doing something wrong. Oh.. so.. you mean my at least 5 trips unless someone is helping me could be improved? Duh. I need a push cart that holds a lot! I need to pack my things better, but I really need a big push cart. I need to lift things properly and adjust my posture when sitting at the computer or sewing machine for hours on end. Take care of yourself. You won't say to yourself "Oh I shouldn't have signed up for that physical therapy or yoga class" 10 years down the road but you might catch yourself saying the opposite. </li>
</ul>
<div>
Anywho! That's it for now. I will try to blog more! </div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10210683210427194039noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5121196442011977508.post-26247326356991329712011-11-16T09:46:00.001-08:002011-11-16T10:05:17.965-08:00Queen City Holiday Craft Show<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

One down, 4 more to go. Thanks to all the hard working folks at <a href="http://www.twistfair.com/">twist</a> who put a great show together. It was so awesome to see many long lost craft fair friends! I am getting ready for show number two, <a href="http://www.queencitycraft.com/">Queen City Craft</a> that is happening this Saturday. I hope you'll come check it out! If you are a regular shopper at Queen City and are looking for me, I'm excited to say I'll be switching up my spot this year, so look for me upstairs!<br />

It's crunch time for Twist which starts tomorrow! I have just been tying up all of the loose ends. I'm excited to say this is the first show where I'll have my <a href="http://nicolecarey.etsy.com/">appliqued patchwork hoodies</a>! <br />

I wanted to share some more of the artist that will be vending there. There is so much awesomeness that I had to split it into two posts, see my Vermont artist post <a href="http://nicoleerincarey.blogspot.com/2011/11/twist.html">here</a>.<br />

My, how time flies. I wanted to highlight some of my favorite vendors that will be at Twist. There are so many that i'll be splitting it into two posts: my fellow Vermont artist friends and then a second one of non VT peeps. This show is amazing. It is my second time doing it. It's such a breeze to load in and out and I don't even have to bring a table or garment rack, it's rather luxurious. And as vendors, we even get fed! Hot DOG! No, not fed hot dogs but you catch my drift.<br />

No more plain hoodies, t-shirts or yoga pants for that matter will be left in my closet for very long. I started this for fun, but meanwhile trying to figure out how I could come up with enough inventory for the holidays and the ridiculous amount of shows I signed myself up for. I just don't have the time to stock all of the shops I sell in, keep things rolling on etsy and prepare for shows with all one-of-a-kind made-from-scratch pieces. I took a little poll on facebook and it seemed that there would be interest in some of these designs on some more simple pieces. I also think this is a more affordable approach for some people who were interested in my designs but couldn't necessarily afford the one-of-a-kinds.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
After buying a few sample hoodies, yoga pants, and t-shirts I've come up with some really cute designs that I hope to have photographed over the next week or so but meanwhile, I want to know:What colors would you like to see in terms of hoodies & tees? I'm thinking mainly long sleeved tee's? I can be swayed.<br />
<br />
Please help! <b>What would YOU like to see</b>? :) I'm not sure if I'll be putting these on etsy, or just taking them to some shows and putting in some shops. I'm also not sure if I'll continue them after the holidays. It all depends on how they go over. I'd love opinions!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10210683210427194039noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5121196442011977508.post-30096157115180981242011-10-24T11:11:00.000-07:002011-10-24T11:12:51.963-07:00Holiday Shows!Here is what my crazy holiday show calendar looks like this year! Yay! I am this week's <a href="http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2011/quit-your-day-job-nicole-carey/?ref=fp_blog_title">Quit Your Day Job Interview</a> feature thingy majig on etsy. I can't tell you how humbled, honored and excited I am to have had this opportunity. Check that one off of my bucket list! ;)<br />

Yep. It's totally always this neat and organized. Just a short week and a half ago, my world was rocked by being asked to do this interview. I of course dropped every other project and everything else that I was doing in order to make my studio look totally awesome and unrealistic. When reading most of those interviews on etsy I always was so envious by how neat and organized their studios were. Now I'm SURE that they all had to have done what I did. Or maybe not. Maybe it's not normal that I over ran the rest of my apartment with the the stuff I usually keep in my studio in the hall and my bedroom. I wanted it to look really really nice for the 3-5 photos she asked me to take. What? I took hundreds and pondered over which to use for days? Who said that?<br />
<br />Anyway, I had so much fun and am still pinching myself :)<br />
<br />
Here are a few of the photos I loved but didn't use<br />

Thanks so much for reading my interview and now it's time for me to get back to work on things for the holidays! Speaking of, I have been having so much fun doing applique! After I ran out of tea towels, moleskines and all of my old hoodies, I was thinking of buying some nice hoodies or maybe thrifting some for the holidays but would love some input on what you think? Here is a photo of what some may look like: </div>

It is the craft show of craft shows after all. It's HUGE with 300 vendors and they host shows in Brooklyn, San Francisco, LA, Austin, London & Chicago. Renegade is based in Chicago and also has a brick and mortar shop in Chicago along Division St.<br />
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Several months ago I was super excited to get the news that I was accepted to the Chicago show! I planned on driving so that I could bring as much with me as possible and just a good old fashioned road trip with my Mom was in store.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I headed to Dallas, PA (my old stomping grounds) to spend a few days with friends and family before heading to Chicago. I was a little worried about being able to travel through Vermont and upstate NY because so many roads were washed out due to Irene. Luckily though, all roads were clear and I made the trip with my two buddies safe and sound. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once I arrived in PA I was very surprised to see that the flooding had followed me. It was awful to hear again that so many people were in jeopardy of losing everything. This also proved to be an obstacle for us getting to Chicago. On Thursday before the show we hopped onto 80west for about an hour before the road was closed. I stopped at three different truck stops trying to find a different route to take to cross the Susquehanna. I kept getting responses like 'YA AINT GETTIN THERE FROM HERE' or 'YOU BETTER FIND A PLACE TO STAY QUICK' </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
AH! My family on lower ground was being evacuated and staying at my Mom's house. Evacuation deadlines moved up from 8pm to 4pm. It seemed like it was going to be serious business and for a minute we thought we should just turn around and go home. If waters receded we could drive through the night on Friday! or maybe make it in time for Saturday. It all seemed crazy. One fed-ex trucker suggested taking a crazy route that he STILL wasn't sure was passable and would have extended the trip from 11 hours to 19, nonetheless we had lost a few already driving to a road closure and turning around. I had to try. We headed to the turnpike and passed through a few areas that we thought the road would be closed. After a few hours, 81 WAS open through Harrisburg and that meant smooth sailin'! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
After a VERY long drive, we made it to Chicago! What a lovely city. We had a free day to walk around and eat yummy food and relax. I'm sure there was much more that I hadn't checked out but my favorite neighborhood that I had been to was the one Renegade was held in, Wicker Park. The shopping on Milwaukee St. was great, too! Lots of cute vintage stores. Then it was back to the hotel to get some sleep before the big show!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was the first of the staggered load in times, which was great because I am a bit finicky with moving things around 10 times until I get it right. It was SO EASY to load in. We rented a tent, so didn't have to bother with putting one up and we were able to pull the car right next to the tent. It may sound silly, but that can make such a difference. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I set up my (half) booth and met my awesome booth mate Tiyani of <a href="http://www.tiselle.com/">Tiselle</a>. She made really lovely letterpress cards. One of the most exciting things about doing a show of this size was being able to see so much cool stuff in person! Lots of things I've gawked at on etsy and also people I hadn't seen in a while. I also got to meet several different shop owners of whom I sell in their shop! Here are some of the things I purchased while I did the rounds of shopping.</div>
